What Is A Combination (Combi) Boiler?

A combi boiler is a type of central heating system that performs two functions: providing hot water on demand and heating to the home.

One of the perks of combi boilers is that they’re a lot sleeker and smaller to install. This is because they don’t require separate hot water and cold water tanks like other heating systems.

Let’s look at how combi boilers work.

How Do Combi Boilers Work?

Often powered by gas, a combi boiler when activated fires up and begins to pump hot water through your heating system, filling radiators and any underfloor heating you may have.

The boiler remains on at all times so that you can access hot water on demand. When a hot water tap is activated the boiler’s heat exchanger rapidly heats the cold water with the help of gas and electric elements within the device.

This system means that there is no need to store additional water in tanks, saving all-important space in your home.

When Should I Use A Combi Boiler?

While there are many perks to using a combi boiler, it does have its limitations which can mean that in some homes, they’re not ideal.

If you have a small home with a single bathroom and a low demand for hot water, a combi boiler will likely be ideal. They can provide instant hot water for showers, though in some homes they may suffer water pressure problems if someone is washing the dishes for example.

Combi boilers are also suitable for those looking to achieve greater energy efficiency than other central heating systems. This is because they only heat water when it’s needed and do not heat water stored in tanks.

They’re also ideal for those with a smaller budget.
